US attack on pro-Assad forces condemned by Syria and Russia: Air strikes by the US led coalition on pro Syrian government forces have been condemned by Syria and its ally Russia.

Syria has said that these strikes were “blatant attack on forces fighting terrorism” while Russia had said that the strikes had breached country’s sovereignty. The convoy had been hit when it neared a group of US backed rebels and a Western Special Forces unit in Tanf.

The US has said that the Russian authorities had been informed prior to the incident; the US claims that warning shots had been ignored.

According to the state run TV Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov has stated that these strikes were “completely unacceptable.” Mr Gatilov has said in Geneva that any military action which might lead to an escalation of the conflict will have an impact on the political process.

Maghaweer al-Thawra which is a rebel faction backed by the US has said that the convoy was about 27km (17 miles) away and contained four tanks. A US defence official has stated that the convoy had not responded to the numerous warnings that it was “getting too close to coalition forces.”

The US led coalition in a statement has said that pro regime forces which consisted of Syrian and Iranian backed by militias had “posted a threat to US and partner forces” But according to a statement given by the Syrian news agency Sana the air strikes on Thursday targeted one of the “military points” of its army.

The Syrian army has claimed that “a number” of deaths and “some material losses” the army would not be cowed by attempt to stop the army from performing its counter terrorism duties.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights which is a UK based monitoring group, eight people were killed and it has claimed that most of the killed were not Syrian.
