Trump visits Saudi Arabia for his first foreign tour

Trump visits Saudi Arabia for his first foreign tour: President Donald Trump left for Saudi Arabia to conduct first foreign trip since becoming president.

The President’s eight day trip will also take him to Israel, the Palestinian territories, Brussels, the Vatican and Sicily. The tour comes amid the ongoing investigation against President Trump and his team, President Trump has strongly criticised the decision to appoint a special counsel to carry out the investigation of Russian influence in the American elections.

The trip will take President Trump to the capitals of three monotheistic religions namely Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

Just hours before President Trump’s arrival the Saudi air defence units claimed that they had brought down a rocket south of the Saudi capital Riyadh, the rocket was fired from Yemen by Houthi rebels. After this event the Saudi warplanes are reported to have carried out retaliatory strikes on targets close to the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

A senior Saudi prince has said that “We want you to be a superpower” this is how the kingdom has described its message to the US. From the onset of President Trump’s election the Saudi rulers had hailed President Trump, the Saudi’s believe that this will result in greater US engagement in the middle east.

The Saudi’s expect President Trump to take a discourse from his predecessor President Obama’s policies, the retreat in Syria and the nuclear deal with Riyadh’s main rival in the region Iran. The Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir admittedly said that it was a diplomatic coup, and the aim of it was to claim the first stop on the President’s first foreign visit, Mr al-Jubeir said that there may be more events to make history in this trip.

According to another senior Saudi official the move was an attempt to normalise relations with Israel. Riyadh is also looking to build alliances to confront extremist groups. The Saudi’s also seek to create more pressure on Iran through its alliances.

Mr Trump will also attend the Arab Islamic American Summit in Riyadh, the President will also speak about his “hopes of a peaceful vision of Islam” in what his aides believe will be a speech the president hopes will resonate worldwide and express “a common vision of peace, progress and prosperity“.

Conversely President Trump had caused controversy during his campaign by calling for Muslims to be temporarily banned from entering the US over security concerns.
