Pakistan Is Investing In Artificial Intelligence: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become the “In” and top technology these days. Pakistan has recently allocated around $3.3 million annually to this 5th generation technology of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and internet of things. The government has allocated seed money of Rs.1.1 billion for the period of three years to initiate a project on IA. Under Higher Education Commission (HEC), 6 public sector universities are told to set up nine labs and carry out research in the field of AI. The 6universities selected for this project include NUST, Islamabad, Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) University, NED UET Karachi, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar, UET Lahore and University of Punjab Lahore with NUST as the Headquarter of the project.
Intelligent Robotics Lab and Deep Learning Lab, Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Lab, Smart City Lab, Neuro Computation Lab, Intelligent Criminology Lab, Agent Based Computational Modeling Lab will be established by these universities to promote AI.
Further, National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC) will focus on specialized streams of Computer Software with focus on artificial intelligence in the best 50 universities. Students will be funded and faculty salaries be subsidized to encourage high quality human resource to engage in development of the program. Each university receives a funding of Rs.10 million to set up a state of the art artificial intelligence lab to support the new program.
In an era of 4th industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) Pakistan is still living in the 2nd industrial revolution (Industry 2.0) era. India is spending $480 million annually and China is also spending billions in the field of research and development of IA. Today our country needs skilled human resource within coming years in the field of artificial intelligence. Pakistan has a great aptitude and brilliant pool which can compete international scholars and that is possible if government financially supports them and gives scholarship to talented and deserving students so they come ahead uninterruptedly and exploit their potential in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
With the promotion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Pakistan we hope to see Robots serving us everywhere from home, schools, restaurants to hospitals and even at airports carrying our luggage.
