Pakistan Gets The Credit For Hosting Refugees: United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in their report that published yesterday has stated that Pakistan is hosting the largest refugee population in the world. Most of them are from Afghanistan while the total number of refugees present in the country is more than 1.45 million.

UNHCR gave credit to Pakistan for hosting unconditionally millions of refugees and provided best possible facilities to affected people of different countries. Pakistan is praised for giving special treatment for Afghan citizens when the Afghan war was on its peak.

Pakistan has continued hosting Afghan refugees for more than 3 decades, the report added. Since March 2002, UNHCR has facilitated the return of approximately 4.1 million registered Afghans from Pakistan. However the report maintained that Pakistan government’s time frame for voluntary, safe and dignified return appears limited and alternative solutions have yet to be progressed.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency endorsed their commitment to work with the Governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan on long-term solutions for 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Ms. Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, UNHCR Representative for Pakistan, acknowledged and commended the people and the Government of Pakistan for having hosted and cared for Afghan refugees for almost four decades.

UNHCR will continue to work with the Government of Pakistan in-line with their Comprehensive Policy on Voluntary Repatriation and Management of Afghan Nationals (CPVRMAN) and assist both Governments within a Tripartite Framework and agreed Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR). More than 3.5 million Afghan refugees have voluntarily returned to Afghanistan under the Tripartite Framework and UNHCR facilitated voluntary repatriation program.

The voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan to their own country was also the largest in the world, the report stated. UNHCR appreciated the decision of the Pakistan government to extend the Proof of Registration (PoR) cards to Afghan refugees until 30 June 2018.

UNHCR representative restated her call to the international community to continue its fullest support to Afghan refugees and their host communities while underscored the need for creating conditions that are conducive for sustainable return to Afghanistan and making sure that every return is well-informed, voluntary, safe and dignified.

Amnesty International Report

In another report by Amnesty International it was declared that Pakistan is the third largest host for refugees in the world. The top refugee hosting country is Jordan with over 2.7 million refugees followed by Turkey with 2.5 million refugees. Pakistan managed to grab 3rd position in the world as it is home to over 1.6 million refugees.

It stated that 10 countries Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Lebanon, Iran, Ethopia, Kenya, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad host than 50% of the 21 million refugees in the world.
