Russia had issued warning to the US after US coalition downs Syrian jet
US led coalition fighting in Syria has been warned by Russia that it will view its aircraft as targets, after a Syrian military plane was shot down.
On Sunday, 18th June 2017, The coalition had said that it had shot down the Syrian SU-22 after it bombed US-backed rebels in Raqqa province.
Russia which is Syria’s main ally, has said that it was also halting communication with the US aimed at preventing air incidents.
Syria had also condemned America’s “flagrant attack“, and said that it would have “dangerous repercussions.”
The Russian defence ministry has said that “Any aircraft, including planes and drones belonging to the international coalition operating west of the Euphrates river, will be tracked by Russian anti-aircraft forces in the sky and on the ground and treated as targets.”
Russia denied that the US had used a communications channel before the SU-22 fighter bomber was downed.
The defense ministry added that the memorandum of co-operation with the coalition which aimed at preventing air incidents and guaranteeing flight safety was ending as of Monday.
With the downing of a Syrian warplane by a US jet, it now threatens to draw Washington further into the Syrian fighting.
Pro-government Syrian forces have already been attacked by the US forces on the ground after they had entered an exclusion zone which is designed to protect US personnel training and advising anti-government rebels near Syria’s border with Iraq.
Washington has now extended this protection to the forces that it backs and who are engaged in the offensive against Raqqa. Furthermore these on ground tactical steps inevitably can have strategic implications which will create a further source of friction between Washington and Tehran.
Iran’s focus has shifted to the border region between Syria and Iraq. While the struggle to control this crucial territory is becoming ever more dangerous.
The missile strikes on what Iran describes as IS targets shows its determination to for its own defense.
The co-operation between the US and Russia had halted after the US had launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Syria’s Shayrat airbase in April, the missile attack was in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel held town in Idlib province.
However communications between US and Russia had resumed after mutual understanding was reached between the two countries.
The Pentagon on Sunday, 18th June 2017 has said that the SU-22 fighter bomber had been engaged by an F/A-18E Super Hornet after it had dropped bombs near the town of Tabqa in Raqqa province.
It is believed to be the first air-to-air kill of a manned aircraft by a US military jet since the Kosovo campaign in 1999.
