SEM attempts to increase the visibility of a product/website in the search engines. For this purpose, both free traffic generated via SEO as well as paid traffic through Paid Search Advertising are used. SEO is in a way a subset of SEM, that is to say a well-rounded SEM strategy would definitely be using SEO. SEO refers to the optimization of websites in order to attract free traffic from search engines. This free traffic translates to a greater number of possible customers and hence sales.
