Seven al-Qaeda militants killed by US forces in Yemen: Pentagon

Seven al-Qaeda militants killed by US forces in Yemen: Pentagon: The report claims that the militants were killed “through a combination of small arms fire and precision air strikes” in the Marib governorate, east of Sanaa, on Tuesday morning.

The main objective of the said operation was to gather intelligence. The US military did not disclose whether there were any US casualties during the raid. The raid was supported by the Yemeni government.

Through a statement, the US Central Command has said that the militants were members of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The statement further adds that “Raids such as this provide insight into AQAP’s disposition, capabilities and intentions, which will allow us to continue to pursue, disrupt, and degrade AQAP.

In Yemen, the US has already carried out frequent strikes on al-Qaeda’s. These strikes are often carried out through unmanned drones.

However, Al-Qaeda has had taken the advantage of using the chaos caused by the conflict in Yemen to entrench its presence in the south and south-east of the country.

In the past two years, Yemen has been embroiled in fighting between the forces loyal to the internationally recognised president, which are backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Shia Houthi rebels.
