West Bank: Trump to meet Palestinian leader Abbas

West Bank: Trump to meet Palestinian leader Abbas: Direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians have not been held for more than three years; President Trump had acknowledged that it was “one of the toughest deals of all.

President Trump, on Monday, 23rd, May, 2017, had stressed for a stronger bond between the US and Israel. The President had also warned of the threat from Iran to international peace. In Saudi Arabia the President had also used the same theme for Iran. President Trump had also assured Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu that Iran will never posses nuclear weapons.

The two-day Israel and Palestinian visit forms part of President Trump’s first foreign trip as US president. President Trump considers himself a great dealmaker for what he considers the personality to cut through the difficulties that have defeated lesser people.

On the other hand credible ideas still require to create an independent and sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel. The reality on the other hand is that Israelis and Palestinians are way distant on the main issues such as, the future of east Jerusalem, fate of the Palestinian refugees along with the issue of the borders of an independent Palestine. The leaderships at both sides do not have faith on each other.

West Bank, including the Eastern Jerusalem, has been occupied by the Israelis for 50 years. According to some of the most powerful members of the Israeli government it is believed that the land is a Jewish possession, given by God.

On the other hand the Palestinians are deeply divided, with the West Bank and Gaza controlled by different groups, Fatah in charge in the West Bank and in Gaza the Islamists of Hamas. Hamas has been condemned by President Trump in the last few days as a terrorist organisation.

The chances of President Trump making a deal about a conflict, that is centuries old, is highly unlikely.

Besides making this deal is not about fixing a price it is about reconciling enemies with radically different world views.
