Unemployment is of vital importance, particularly to the unemployed: US employers added fewer jobs than expected in May, but the unemployment rate dipped further as the economy headed toward full employment.
The unemployment rate last month was 4.3%, falling a 10th of a percentage point to its lowest level since 2001, the US Labor Department said on Friday.
In the headlines this morning, the U.S. economy added 138,000 new jobs in April, much lower than the 200,000 economists expected. In addition, March’s 211,000 gain was revised lower. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.7%. And average hourly earnings rose a better-than-expected 0.5%.
U.S. stocks opened higher, on the jobs data. Oil prices rose back above $70 a barrel after Thursday’s free fall on news of growing gasoline supplies.
The jobs report is an intimately gazed barometer of the US economy and one of the metrics the US central bank considers as it sets interest rates.
A number of reports have shown that US growth in the first quarter was weak. Federal Reserve officials say they believe the slowdown was temporary.
