US warns that it will use military force against North Korea ‘if we must’

Following North Korea’s Tuesday’s missile tests, the US has said it will use its “considerable military forces” on North Korea “if we must“.

Nikki Haley the US ambassador said that a new resolution will also be tabled against Pyongyang at the United Nations. North’s missile test had been described as a sharp military escalation by her, she also threatened to use trade restrictions. Hours after her speech, the US along with South Korea had fired more missiles into the Sea of Japan as part of military drills.

However Pyongyang has said that it would not be negotiating unless the US ends its “hostile policy” against North Korea.

North Korea’s Tuesday’s missile launch, which was the latest in a series of tests, defied a ban by the UN Security Council. Conversely, the US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and his Japanese counterpart Tomomi Inada has said that the test was an “unacceptable provocation.

According to statement which was released by the US defence department said that the two spoke on the phone, where Gen Mattis had said that the US was committed to defend Japan and provide deterrence.

Earlier on Wednesday, 5th July 2017, Ms Haley had warned that the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test by North Korea was “quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution.

“The United States is prepared to use the full range of our capabilities to defend ourselves, and our allies,” she told the UN Security Council, which met for an emergency session to discuss the test. She further added “One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them, if we must, but we prefer not to have to go in that direction.

In response to the missile tests, on Thursday 6th July 2017 in South Korea, the US held a joint military drill with the South’s troops for a second day.

According to a news agency, the joint military drill involved various destroyers, warships and fighter jets launching guided missiles against a simulated maritime attack.

Ms Haley added that the US will cut of ties with countries which continue to trade with North Korea against UN resolution.

She added “We will look at any country that chooses to do business with this outlaw regime” US President Donald Trump had earlier criticized China for its trade with North Korea.

Mr Trump has arrived in Warsaw where he is due to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for the second time. He will later travel to Hamburg for the G20 summit, where world leaders are expected to discuss the missile test.
