China has invited foreign doctors to treat dissident Liu Xiaobo

Medical experts from the US and Germany have been invited to help treat Chinese Nobel peace laureate Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel peace laureate has terminal liver cancer.

Authorities of the north-eastern Shenyang city, where the dissident Mr Liu has been treated, has said that the decision was made after the request of his family.

In 2009, Mr Liu had been jailed for 11 years on subversion charges for calling for greater democracy.

The decision by China comes just days before a G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany.

It is being said that China had been nervous that the issue could have overshadowed the appearance of President Xi Jinping at the summit.

The Nobel peace prize was won by Mr Liu in 2010, Mr Liu had been a key leader in the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.

Liu Xia who is the wife of Mr Liu has been under house arrest ever since then however she has never been charged.

Mr Liu had been diagnosed with cancer in May, however he was later released on medical parole in order to be treated by tumour experts in Shenyang’s hospital.

After he had been moved from the prison, international human rights groups along with several Western diplomats, including from both Germany and the US, had called for the dissident to be allowed to leave the country for treatment.

He has been described as the “foremost symbol” of the human rights struggle in China by the the Nobel committee in Oslo.

The Nobel Laureate was never allowed to collect his prize and he was represented by an empty chair at the ceremony. On the other hand the Chinese government had been infuriated by the award and had cut ties with Norway for several years.

Three years of his sentence for inciting subversion after drafting Charter 08 are still remaining. The charter had called for multi party democracy and respect for human rights in China.

According to the Amnesty International Mr Liu should never have been jailed.
