What is a Wildlife Rehab Center?

Wildlife rehab centers are non-profit organizations whose main objective is to look after injured, orphaned and sick wild animals. Once these animals have recovered and are ready, they are released back in the wild. However, this is not the sole objective of a wildlife rehab center.

Public education regarding wildlife and conservation of endangered species also comes under the umbrella of a wildlife rehab center.

Rehabilitators are the Life-lines of A Wildlife Rehab Center

A Wildlife rehab center is dependent on the rehabilitators who work there. Caring for and feeding the rescued animals is only part of the job. Rehabilitators have to be jack-of-all-trades.

From daily feeding the rescued animals to veterinary experience, to even having some basic construction experience, the whole center depends on the rehabilitator. A rehabilitator is also responsible for educating the public about wildlife and how to deal with certain situations.

What Really Happens?

  • The first step is animal intake in the center. This intake may occur in the center itself or out in the field. In either case, the intake rehabilitator gathers the necessary history and information regarding the animal.
  • The second part of animal intake involves a primary and detailed physical examination of the animal and triage. This involves a quick examination of the animal for any life-threatening injury and its immediate care. Once the animal has been stabilized, a detailed and thorough examination is then carried out.
  • The next step is an important part of any wildlife recovery center. It is the rehabilitation of the animal which involves follow-up treatments, daily rounds and observations and ensures a slow and steady recovery for the animal so that it can be successfully released in the wild again.
