‘Baghdaddy’ – A musical play depicting Iraq war: The events surrounding the Iraq war were disastrous and full of agony, and one would never think that the music or comedy can depict them in any manner whatsoever. But Bughdaddy, a musical play, which was out on Monday, tries to capture the misadventures taken by American agencies during that time which will surely continue to haunt them.

The play does give a potent message to new US President Donald J Trump about how to move on intelligence reports gathered by the agencies and especially by the non-official planted agents worldwide.

Iraq war started with allegations that they have garnered weapons of mass destruction and can use them against anyone anytime. Later, this whole quagmire brought America in a very awkward position when an Iraqi defector Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi who went by the undercover name of “Curveball” publicly admitted for the first time that he made up stories about mobile Bio weapons trucks and secret factories. He said he did so because he “had a problem with the Saddam regime and wanted to get rid of him.”

The first scene shows Frankfurt airport where this informant ‘Curveball’ tries to ink a deal with the security agencies, to get a political asylum in the United States for handing over the proofs and a trail leading to Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction. CIA at that time after the necessary consultations, which according to the later developments were not sufficient, gave green signal to attack Iraq. That attack was, if anything, a ticket to bring them out of everyday monotonous routine and fast-track promotions.

The music in play contains some traditional tunes with classic dance performances. Hip-hop tracks in the play make sure to serve a warning through their lyrics that such a heinous crime should never be committed ever again.

Charlie Fink, producer for the play says, “it is more relevant than ever in today’s climate of “fake news” and “alternative facts” as some fear that Trump could drag the country into another conflict, if not in Syria then over North Korea.’

He further said, ‘If you put ‘Hamilton’ and ‘The Office’ in a blender you would have this show.’

Two years back in 2015 the same play was performed on stage  but with shorter length and  it couldn’t get the kind of applause it dreamed of, but now with many additions and improvements it engaged viewers in a quality show.

Another aspect of this play highlighted by the Director, co-writer and composer of this play Marshall Pailet was that people should consider it an apology for the 2003 invasion, not just from the then President George W. Bush or United States government but from the country as a whole and all the allies who played their part in this war.

He said, “We opened up their minds and their hearts with comedy, we’re able to slip in substance, story, character and a lesson.”

AD Penedo, who wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book, generously admitted that it wasn’t an easy task to blend misery and music to attain a fine piece of play as an end result, but our motive was very clear, all we wanted was to impart a message to the people that should unfold to them the realities and facts in an entertaining way.
