First Ever Pakistan’s National Water Policy Approved: First Ever Pakistan National Water Policy Mutually Approved By Federal And Provincial Governments As “Pakistan Water Charter”
The federal and provincial governments have agreed on national water policy and have signed the agreed document called as “Pakistan Water Charter”. In a meeting of Council of Common Interest (CCI), chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi the whole country developed an accord for activities to cater the future needs of water and deal with water shortage in the country, when four chief ministers signed the charter, promising their commitment to the Pakistan first ever National Water Policy (NWP).
National Water Policy Includes
- Water uses and allocation of priorities,
- Integrated planning for development and use of water resources,
- Environmental integrity of the Basin,
- Impact of climate change,
- Trans-boundary water sharing,
- Irrigated and rain-fed agriculture,
- Drinking water and sanitation,
- Hydropower, industry, ground water,
- Water rights and obligations,
- Sustainable water infrastructure,
- Water related hazards, quality management, awareness and research,
- Conservation measures,
- Legal framework and capacity building of water sector institutions.
National Water Council (NWC)
The implementation of National Water Policy (NWP) will be undertaken through a national level body namely “National Water Council” (NWC) that will be chaired by the prime minister and comprising of federal ministers for Water Resources, Finance, Power, Planning Development & Reforms and all provincial chief ministers as members.
Kazi Committee Methodology (KCM)
The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) presented a brief on the implementation of Kazi Committee Methodology (KCM) for calculation of Net Hydel Profits (NHP).
Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak, Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, federal ministers Professor Ahsan Iqbal, Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari, Adviser to the Prime Minister Miftah Ismail and senior officials attended the meeting.
The CCI appreciated the efforts of Planning Commission of Pakistan and the Ministry of Water Resources and universally approved the first ever National Water Policy of Pakistan.
