Islamabad Is Hosting South Asian Conference On Sanitation (SACOSAN) For The Second Time: Demographic, socio-economic profile of the country in context of key indicators of health, education, hunger and poverty define basic system and structure of governance in the country.

South Asian Conference On Sanitation (SACOSAN) a government led two-yearly convention is held on a rotational basis in each SACOSAN member country.  Member countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

SACOSAN has a glorious history of being a truly regional event. The aim of this conference has been instrumental in generating a political will towards better sanitation in the region over a decade with the following broader objectives;

  • To accelerate the progress in sanitation and hygiene promotion in South Asia
  • To reiterate political commitment in each country of the region for furthering the sanitation agenda
  • To share experiences and lessons learnt in sanitation and hygiene promotion

Previous 6 SACOSAN’s were held in Dhaka (2003), Islamabad (2006), India (2008), Srilanka (2011), Kathmandu (2013) & Dhaka (2016). It followed following themes during the events

  • To promote sanitation as an urgent and priority issue for the participant governments. Conference Declaration
  • To recognize water and sanitation as human rights issues
  • “Sanitation for Dignity and Health”
  • to set up a national body in each country to coordinate sanitation and hygiene involving all stakeholders. Conference Declaration

  • “Better Sanitation, Better life”

SACOSAN 7 is going on for the second time in Islamabad from April 10-14, 2018 with a theme “Safe sanitation in South Asia-Plan 2030”. SACOSAN Is a powerful agent for sanitation and hygiene progress in South Asia and a platform to transfer responsibility of “SouthAsiaPlan2030” to next generation.

After the 18th amendment in the constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector is a provincial subject and overseen by a number of departments, including Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Local Government and Community Development, Works and Services, Health, and Education for WASH in schools.

Budgeting in line with SDGs can help Pakistan easily achieve the target by 2030, shared by a health expert in the 7th South Asian Conference on Sanitation here in Islamabad. It is being stressed that Pakistan needs to set clear targets at the state and provincial level, devolving actions plans to manage sanitation(liquid and solid waste management) hygiene (hand washing) and clean drinking water.
