No evidence to suggest Mashal Khan committed blasphemy: KP IG: HumSub.TV: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police inspector general on Monday said there was no evidence to suggest Mardan university student who was beaten to death on campus committed blasphemy.
“There was no blasphemous content uploaded on Mashal Khan’s social media pages prior to his lynching,” KP IG Salahuddin Khan Mehsud said while addressing media.
He added there’s no concrete evidence, the university student who was beaten to death on campus over blasphemy allegations had committed blasphemy. The IG also said that another student Abdullah had recorded his statement before the police. “A friend has denied that he and Mashal Khan uploaded any blasphemous content on social media,” Mehsud said.
He added that Mashal Khan was killed before being given a chance to defend himself.
An inquiry had been initiated by the university administration before Mashal’s murder, Mehsud said, adding that the student was accused of being involved in blasphemy.
The IG, however, said that he would not comment on the political affiliation of those accused of being involved [in the murder].
Refuting allegations that police did not intervene in the matter and watched Mashal as he was beaten to death, the K-P IG said, “During terror incidents in Mardan several months ago, police and university administration had decided that the university will hire private security guards for security. In this case, we were informed only after the dispute started and when Mashal was being dragged out of his hostel room.”
According to Mehsud, deputy superintendent police Haider Khan put his life in danger and took Mashal’s body out of the infuriated mob’s possession.
Policemen keep visiting this university very often as we keep receiving complaints from this campus. 50-60 ex-servicemen have been hired by the university administration for its security.
Addressing the media, the K-P IG said there’s no concrete evidence to suggest Mardan university students committed blasphemy. Mehsud said police has sought help from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to progress in the investigation.
Mashal, a student of Journalism and Mass Communication at the Abdul Wali Khan University (AWKU), was shot in the head and chest and then his body desecrated by a mob who accused him of committing blasphemy. The harrowing video of the sickening violence shot by mobile phone cameras showed Mashal’s disrobed body being dragged, first in a hallway and then on a road of the campus.
Rehman, the caretaker, said Mashal was alive when the police arrived, but that they did not approach the hostel until it was too late. “They could have easily saved his life but they stood away from the mob…I heard one officer say it’s good that they sent this non-believer to hell,” he said.
Mardan police chief Mohammad Alam Shinwari denied the allegation that officers did not do enough to save Khan. “When we entered the campus, he had already been killed and the mob was trying to burn his body,” he said.
In Mashal’s hometown of Swabi, around 60 km south of Mardan, his father, Iqbal Shaer, said the accusations of blasphemy were unfounded. “First they killed my son and now they are adding salt to our wounds,” he said.
At Mashal’s funeral, the imam at the local mosque refused to lead the last rites, according to Swabi resident Salman Ahmed. A technician who was asked to do so in the cleric’s place was confronted by several people afterwards. Mashal has since been buried.
