Pakistan could be fined after an embarrassing outcome in international litigations

A hefty fine of around RS85 billion could be in store for Pakistan in the coming months as the country met an embarrassing outcome in several international litigation.
The latest of the fines came when the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) directed an order to Islamabad for it to pay RS11 Billion claimed by an independent power producers (IPP).

The Federal government has been stacked up in international arbitrations. It is estimated that the Federal government has paid around Rs3 billion since 2013 to several law firms and lawyers.

After several background meetings with the senior officials of the government who have been related with the international arbitrations, it has been learnt that despite paying millions of dollars to different law firms and lawyers in order to plead the cases of Pakistan in international cases including those of Indian spy Kulbushan Jadhav, Karkey rental power plants’, Reko Diq mining, Kishanganga hydropower project, Progas LPG, Hubco Power, Sapphhire Electric and Halmore Energy. Not a single victory has been conceded by the hired legal team so far.

Another tribunal will start proceedings a case to determine the quantum of rest of the damages claimed by nine companies of the IPPs for which a hearing is scheduled for next month, a cabinet member told The News. “Claims’ amount may go up after a new quantum stage is set up,” he feared.
