Pakistan Successfully Tested Cruise Missile Babur:

ISPR shared that indigenously developed Submarine Launched Cruise Missile Babur yesterday having a range of 450 kms. Officials present during the test were DG Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Chairman NESCOM, Commander Naval Strategic Force Command (NSFC), senior officials, scientists and engineers from Strategic Scientific Organizations. The ISPR did release an interesting footage of the SLCM Babur test, showing it launch from its underwater platform in an encapsulated frame, reach the sea surface and eject its capsule.

Using an underwater platform, the missile was fired which successfully reached the target. It met all the flight parameters. The Submarine Launched Cruise Missile Babur can

  • It includes underwater controlled propulsion, advanced guidance and navigation features.
  • Provides Pakistan response to provocative nuclear strategies and posture being pursued in the neighborhood through induction of nuclear submarines and ship-borne nuclear missiles which is leading to nuclearisation of Indian Ocean Region.

It is considered as a step towards reinforcing the policy of “Credible Minimum Deterrence” through indigenization and self-reliance. SLCM purpose is to build a comprehensive strategic element at sea from the surface and underwater.

President of Pakistan, Prime minster and chairman JCSC and services chiefs have congratulated the scientists, engineers and NSFC personnel for successful achievement of this highly significant milestone.

Pakistan did the first test in January 2017 of the previously-designated Babur-3 SLCM. The stated range has not changed (at 450 km) and the test was conducted from an unidentified underwater mobile platform.

Pakistan Navy Agosta 90B submarines are undergoing an upgrade (being conducted in Pakistan with a state-owned Turkish defence contractor leading the effort). The next generation Air Independent propulsion (AIP)-equipped submarines on order from China – i.e. the Hangor-class (II) will not being reaching the Pakistan Navy until at least 2022.

Pakistan Navy is looking forward to further improve in fuel-efficient engine, improved flight control system (e.g. using space and making room for more fuel) and reducing the missile airframe’s weight with the SLCM launch.
