Russian electoral interference to be investigated by former FBI boss

Russian electoral interference to be investigated by former FBI boss: Former FBI boss, Robert Mueller, has been named the special counsel to oversee an inquiry concerning the alleged Russian involvement in the American President’s election campaign. Mueller was named by the Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstien, said that it was in the public interest to have an outsider. The appointment of Mueller has been praised by politicians on all sides.

Ever since President Donald Trump fired the most recent FBI director, James Comey, the call to assign a special prosecutor had been mounted.

The FBI and Congress are looking for potential Russian links in President Trump campaign.  It is believed by the American intelligence agencies that Moscow tried to tip the election in favour of the President Trump.

An hour after Mueller was appointed as the independent investigator, President Trump gave a statement in which he predicted that the investigation will clear him and his team of the allegations. Earlier the White house had said that there was no need for an investigation by an outsider. The President had said “A thorough investigation will confirm what we already know – there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity

At this moment the top Democrat in the Senate, Mr Chuck Schumer, said that “Mr Mueller was exactly the right kind of individual for this job“. Mueller’s appointment was also seen as a positive step by the the House Oversight Committee Chairman, Jason Chaffetz. The chairman said that Mueller had “impeccable credentials“.

Announcing the move of hiring Mueller as the independent investigator, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had said “The public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.” By announcing the appointment of a special counsel, Mr Rosenstein had cited that it would be an understatement to say that the circumstances surrounding the ongoing FBI Russia investigation were “unusual “.

Mueller’s reply has been calm and calculative, stating “I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability.” Mueller will have a range or powers.

According to Rosenstien the circumstances are not just unusual, they are unprecedented. Never has there been an administration so embattled so early in its term and nor have there even been such grave allegations of electoral meddling by a foreign power in a US presidential election.

The Russian story has entered a new and a much more serious phase. With a sterling reputation in Washington, DC Robert Mueller is the right man to deliver results. Mueller had worked with Comey when the FBI director Comey served as the deputy attorney general in George W Bush’s administration. Mueller understands pressure-cooker politics and he knows how to navigate the corridors of power. It is believed he has the character and the power to bring criminal charges in this investigation if necessary.

Mueller is still part of the justice department and thus reports to President Trump. However with his stature it is unlikely that he will be cowed by the president.
