Sheridan Smith, prevent of Funny Girl performances due to mumps

Sheridan Smith has been forced to pull out of multiple Funny Girl performances after contracting mumps.

The British actress has been playing jazz age entertainer Fanny Brice in the popular stage show revival since November, 2015, however previously missed performances due to stress and exhaustion following her father Colin’s cancer diagnosis last year (2016). She also missed a planned Royal Variety Performance when he passed away.

She has since returned to the production as it continues to tour but has now had to cancel more dates after falling ill with the mumps, a viral disease which has symptoms including fever, muscle pain and headaches.

Funny Girl is currently on a seven date stint at Cliffs Pavilion in South end, Essex, where understudy Natasha Barnes will step in once again after filling in before.

“Everyone wishes her a speedy recovery,” officials at the venue said.

Funny Girl is touring until August, and despite the mishaps Sheridan, 35, has received rave reviews for her performance.

The Cilla star made a brave return to the stage following her dad’s death when she sang two of the play’s songs, People and Don’t Rain On My Parade, at the launch party of London restaurant Bunga Bunga in January.

“It’s so good to be back on stage because I find it very cathartic. It’s kind of a relief when I’m up there singing,” she told a newspaper at the time. “The crowd was electric and it just couldn’t have gone better for me tonight. I’m very emotional.”
