Traders Protest Ends In Islamabad

Traders Protest Ends In Islamabad: The traders from North Waziristan Agency (NWA) ended their protest in Islamabad last night. NWA traders had been staging a protest sit-in in Islamabad had successful talks with officials of the government. Earlier, these traders from North Waziristan protested in Bannu and Peshawar to bring into notice of the government the losses they suffered but their demands remained unfulfilled after which they staged a sit-in in Islamabad.

The traders were demonstrating their protest for the past four days in Islamabad which followed talks between a delegation sent by them and the political administration at the National Press Club (NPC). Traders representative also met Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor.

Traders were demanding compensation for their losses specifically 10,000 shops as result of militancy in which 21,000 traders of North Waziristan were affected. They said that government’s claims of rehabilitation of the displaced people are not true as no help has been extended to traders to revive their businesses. Local people had to vacate their houses and shops. Military action against terrorists had caused mass displacement from the tribal region and affected business and trade activities in North Waziristan Agency.

Traders left their businesses of billions of rupees and their shops and markets were turned into ruins and they found none of their valuable items when they returned to the area.

The meeting with government lasted for hours, during which the representatives were assured of compensation for their losses and that another meeting for resolution of the issue would be held in North Waziristan. Ajmal Baloch, president of Islamabad traders association, said the DG ISPR had assured of rehabilitation of the trader’s businesses.

North Waziristan Agency (NWA) will have meeting with local civil, military and FATA Secretariat representatives on April 22nd to discuss genuine issues and way forward. The assistant political agent would be responsible for implementation of an agreement reached between the traders and political administration. Senator Aurangzeb Orakzai and Ajmal Baloch will be the guarantors of the agreement.

DG ISPR in a statement said that economic rehabilitation of tribes takes priority, adding mainstreaming of FATA remains key to their empowerment and prosperity further adding that added that restoration of normal life after kinetic operation is part of “clear-hold-build-transfer” strategy.
