Why There Is No Upto 50% Sale On Labor Day In Pakistan?: Labor Day or Worker’s Day is a celebration of laborers and the working classes every year on the 1st of May.  This day honors the labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. In earlier times or you can say in the ancient times this day symbolized the rebirth of nature as well as human fertility.

1st May began in the late 19th century with the trade unions and labor movements deciding a day to be set for labor recognition.

It is a national holiday in the Russian Federation and Asian countries while “labor day” in the United States (US) is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September.

In Pakistan the day is marked by rallies, marches, processions, labor and worker union sessions with organized street demonstrations to show solidarity with workers around the country and the globe. Specific symbols associated with Labor Day in Pakistan are hammers and sickles that are frequently seen on play cards and banners carried by workers during the Labor Day parades. On this day workers and labor unions protest against labor suppression and demand for more rights, better wages and benefits as well.

According to the latest Labor Force Survey by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the estimate of the size of the labor force in Pakistan is 61 million. There are 46.7 million male and 14.3 million female workers in various fields while 42 million workers live in rural areas and 19 million in urban areas.

Pakistan became a member of the International Labor Organization (ILO) right after its independence in 1947. Pakistan’s first labor policy was devised in 1972 that formulated the creation of the Social Security Network (SSN), Old Age Benefit Schemes (OBS) and Workers Welfare Fund (WWF). Pakistan’s constitution also contains various provisions and articles about labor rights.

But what remains the question here, “Why there is no Sale announced on Labor Day in Pakistan”?. If we at large want to benefit labor besides rallies and raising voice for their rights, we need to offer special discounts, packages, and sale on plenty of items from food, clothes, agricultural goods to transport fares so that labor class also find some relief.

In United States (US), for example, to take advantage of large numbers of potential customers with time to shop, Labor Day has become an important day for discounts and allowances by many retailers claiming it is one of the largest sale dates of the year, second only to the Christmas season’s Black Friday.

If we talk of bonded labor in rural areas of Pakistan, estimated to be more than 2 million is present in brick kilns, fishery and mining are subject to all kinds of exploitation. If there is any package created for them at the grass root level, announce and publicize it so they can take benefit from it. This will not change the workers scenario for life but will bring a sense of dignity and will raise their self-esteem for contributing in the development of country.

Let us try celebrating “Happy Labor Day” in this way as well.
