Assurances by KU to pay RS 60mn dues, electric supply restored: Power supply to Karachi University which is Pakistan’s second largest versity was restored after K-Electric had suspended it on Wednesday.
A K-electric spokesperson said that “We have decided to restore the institution’s power supply after KU officials have ensured that the bill will be paid.”
The earlier decision to suspend power supply to KU was taken after the institution’s failure to pay off electricity dues despite sending multiple notices.
The administration of the varsity has said that they do not have enough funds to pay off the RS86 million in dues on the multiple connections.
KU’s administration has claimed that Karachi University is facing the worst ever budget deficit which amounts to over Rs 1.5 billion.
A KU official said “KU will be unable to pay its faculty and other staff members if the outstanding electricity dues are cleared, We have requested K-Electric to allow the bill to be paid in instalments.”
Opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly and Muttehda Quami Movement’s leader Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan expressed grave concern over the decision to suspend the varsity’s power connection.
