ESPN’s “World Fame 100” Shortlist For 2018: ESPN score athletes in three categories – search score, social media following and endorsement deals. Here are the details of ESPN’s World Fame 100 List for 2018.

To find the 100 most famous athletes in the world, ESPN started with 600 of the biggest names in sports, drawn from 67 countries. ESPN’s Sports Analytics Group then ranked those athletes based on a proprietary formula that took into account three fame factors:

  • Google Trend score,
  • social media following
  • endorsement dollars

BasketBall: Kevin Durant came to Golden State to win NBA championships and picked up a wide-ranging investment portfolio along the way.

Boxing: Anthony Joshua’s unique likability combined with his pure explosiveness in the ring make him a headline act in the UK — and a new entrant in the Fame 100 list.

Cricket: Another entrant in World Fame 100 list is Virat Kohli, the most famous athlete in India.

Golf: Jason Day in September 2015, made it to World No. 1 for the first of three occasions, staying there for a collective total of 51 weeks and making him one of the biggest names in the sport.

NHL: Sidney Crosby (No. 157) and Alex Ovechkin (No. 133) were the highest-ranked hockey players on ESPN’s list of the world’s most famous athletes.

Olympic Sports: Yuzuru Hanyu, the 23-year-old Japanese figure skater who in February became the first man in 66 years to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals, is no ordinary figure skater.

Tennis: Caroline Wozniacki says she has always chased tennis excellence.

FootBall: Cristiano Ronaldo retains his crown after becoming the first player to score in 10 consecutive Champions League matches, helping guide Real Madrid to this year’s final. The Portuguese earns in the region of 40 million dollars through endorsements and has a social following of 121.7 million across the likes of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

NBA superstar Lebron James, who is second on the shortlist, has a social following of 40.8 million.

However King James earns 55 million dollars through sponsorship endorsements.

Neymar, Roger Federer and Tiger Woods are all in the top 10 of ESPN’s shortlist.

Footballers dominate the world fame 100, taking up 32 of the positions, followed by 13 basketball stars, 12 tennis players, seven golfers, and seven American football players.
