Fawad Hassan Fawad Arrested In Ashiana Housing Scam: The National Accountability Bureau has arrested Fawad Hassan Fawad, former secretary to prime minister in Ashiana Iqbal scam, sources said.
The anti-graft body has summoned the officer today.
It is learnt that Fawad had hearing in NAB on Tuesday but an application was submitted before the NAB on his behalf seeking his exemption from Tuesday’s hearing due to some personal reasons. The bureau accepted the application.
According to the case details, M/S Latif and Sons and M/S ConPro were two competitors in the Ashiana Iqbal bidding and the contract was awarded to M/S Latif and Sons, offering the lowest rates. After award of the contract, the Chief Minister’s Office initiated an inquiry with the intention to oust the winning contractor.
Fawad Hassan Fawad, then secretary to Punjab CM, allegedly called the Ashiana Iqbal project director to his office and intimidated him, levelling false allegations of wrongdoings in the award of contract of Aashiana Iqbal to M/S Latif and Sons. He also directed him to cancel the contract illegally.
Fawad, a BPS-22 officer, has worked as Principal Secretary to former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi before being removed from the post by the interim PM Nasirul Mulk on 01 June.
Fawad Hassan Fawad, arguably the most powerful bureaucrat of Pakistan, was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on Thursday.
The former secretary to the prime minister was arrested regarding his role in the multi-millions Ashiana Iqbal scam.
The anti-graft watchdog had been investigating the murky wheeling and dealing regarding the housing project launched by the former Punjab government led by Shehbaz Sharif and the bureaucrat had been facing investigations.
The Grade-22 officer has served as the secretary to the prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as well- he is considered close to the ‘House of Sharif’.
Fawad was arrested after he appeared before the Lahore bureau of the accountability watchdog, for the fourth time in the ongoing probe.
The development comes a day after the anti-graft body announced that it would not arrest the election candidates, though no directives were issued regarding the government officers.
Fawad is also being probed by NAB for possession of assets beyond known sources of income as well as for alleged illegal award of CNG contracts.
Former chief minister Punjab and president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, Shehbaz has already appeared before NAB in the case while former Lahore Development Authority chairman Ahad Cheema is on judicial remand after having been arrested in the same Ashiana Housing scam.
