Gujranwala residents resort to unique protest against garbage woes
Residents of Gujranwala staged a unique protest on Tuesday to draw attention to the city’s mounting garbage crisis.
In a never-done-before move, the agitated residents, after weeks of reportedly futile requests to the authorities to clean up the city, gathered the garbage and threw it outside the office of mayor Sarwat Ikram.
Head of the city’s ‘Aam log (common public) party’ Naseem Sadiq, told the media that his party had formally complained to the mayor about the worsening garbage problem many times in the past, but to “no avail”.
“No action was taken on our complaints. Now [after this move] hopefully the mayor will realise how the public suffers every day,” he said.
Sadiq said his party has given the mayor an ultimatum of two days to take action against the garbage problem, otherwise they would throw the garbage outside the offices of the commissioner and deputy commissioner.
