IHC rejects plea to stop ECP from hearing foreign funding against PTI

IHC rejects plea to stop ECP from hearing foreign funding against PTI: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday rejected an appeal which had pleaded to stop the Election Commission of Pakistan from hearing the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and declared the plea non-maintainable.

According to the court, the foreign funding case against PTI was being heard by another bench which is scheduled to announce a decision on September 5. Therefore, the court said, another such case regarding the issue was not required.

A day earlier, the IHC reserved its judgment regarding the maintainability of the petition regarding foreign funding of the party.

In 2014, a former member of PTI, Akbar S Babar, filed a petition seeking disqualification of PTI Chairperson Imran Khan for allegedly taking funds from illegal sources and over discrepancies in the party’s accounts.

Moreover, Babar had claimed that funds worth US$3million were collected by PTI’s chief through illegal channels from the Middle East to accounts of PTI members.

Earlier, PTI had challenged ECP’s jurisdiction in the case but Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan rejected the party’s petition challenging its authority and ruled that ECP has the jurisdiction to continue with the case.

The ECP was hearing two separate cases related to PTI’s ‘foreign funding’ whereas in the Supreme Court, a case is being heard on the petition of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Hanif Abbasi, who has alleged that the PTI chief should be disqualified for concealing his assets and receiving foreign funding.
