Imran Khan sent a Rs10bn defamation notice by Shahbaz Sharif over bribe allegation

A Rs10bn defamation notice has been sent by the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman (PTI) Imran Khan. The notice has been sent for alleging that the Chairman PTI Imran Khan had been offered a Rs10bn bribe by a close associate of the chief minister in order to drop the Panama Papers case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The defamation notice which had been filed in the court of Lahore additional sessions judge Azfar Sultan under the sections 4 and 9 of the Defamation Ordinance 2002, the notice has stated that PTI chief Imran Khan during a ARY News program “Off the Record” on the 26th April had made claim that a Rs10bn bribe offer had been made to him through a person related to Shahbaz, on behalf of the chief minister and his family.

The allegation made by Khan “tended to lower the [Punjab chief minister] in the estimation of others and reduce him to ridicule, unjust criticism, dislike … and causing him extreme mental torture” the notice has stated.

The notice further states that, the PTI chief had failed to tender a publicly broadcast apology even though he had been served a legal notice in May which had called for an apology for allegedly defaming the chief minister within 14 days.

The notice adds that as a result of Khan’s “false and defamatory allegations” Mr Shahbaz is entitled to a compensation of Rs10bn.

A response from Khan has been sought by the court by 21st July.
