Inauguration of New International Airport Tomorrow: The newly-constructed Islamabad International Airport will formally be inaugurated on the 1st of May, Tuesday. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is expected to inaugurate the new airport.
First Flight of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) that would land on the airport will be from Karachi at 11:00 am.
Complete operation will commence from 3rd May as per sources. The inauguration of the recently-constructed airport was earlier scheduled for April 20th but, it was delayed owing to ongoing construction work on some of its sections.
New Airport Features
It will be the biggest international airport of the country in terms of landing and passenger handling facilities. Main features include
- The new airport will have runways capable of handling larger A380 jets that are now unable to land in the capital.
- It will also have 15 air bridges to allow boarding directly from the terminal, instead passengers riding buses to all planes.
- The “Y” shaped new airport spreads over 19 square kilometers with 15 jetties (passenger boarding bridges), including facilities to accommodate two double-deck A380, the world’s largest airplane, 15 remote bays and seven remote bays for small aircraft such as ATRs.
- For the 15 bays, the same numbers of lounges have been built to avoid mixing of passengers.
- The new airport has two runways each 3.5 km long.
Four routes have been approved for New Islamabad International Airport. In order to facilitate the commuters, fifty air-conditioned mini-busses will operate on all the 4 routes. The fare per km will be Rs. 6. Also, the total charge will not be more than Rs. 260. Furthermore this transport facility will be available 24/7, on all seven days of the week.
The new Islamabad airport is named as Liaquat Ali Khan International Airport but it is still yet not confirm till tomorrow.
Main Concern Is Security Despite Other Issues
There are several security concerns related to the new airport. One of the concerns is current situation of the funnel areas of the Islamabad Airport which are quite near the Motorway and lights can cause a security risk. Rescue and evacuation system of the airport is also weak.
In order to ensure safety and security of all travelers, around 500 airport security force personnel will be positioned at the New Islamabad International Airport. The camp of security staff is 12 km away from the airport. Due to the location of the airport which is in an area where there have been reports of scoundrel activities, security arrangements are not water-tight.
Government must ensure security of passengers and the staff by all means when the airport gets functional. And strengthen other weak areas to stay up with the quality standard of the international airport.
