India Pakistan Ceasefire Ends Again at LoC: India and Pakistan exchanged fire along the Working Boundary last week killing two guards and ending days-old agreement to honour a ceasefire in the disputed region.

India claimed seven civilians were also injured at Aknoor in a barrage that killed two Indian border officers.

“The injured soldiers were immediately evacuated to a military hospital where they later succumbed (to their injuries),” border force spokesman Manoj Yadav told AFP from Jammu.

Pakistan authorities did not immediately comment on India’s allegations or whether any damage was sustained on their side of the border.

The salvo of gun and mortar fire came just four days after Pakistan and India promised to end ceasefire violations in Kashmir.

The two sides had pledged to respect the conditions laid out in a 2003 ceasefire ‘in letter and spirit’.

Both sides blame each other for violating the 15-year ceasefire. Dozens have been killed in border clashes in recent months along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, leaving residents terrified on both sides.

The renewed commitment to the ceasefire had encouraged thousands of civilians to return to their homes after weeks of shelling.

Terming civil population residing along the Line of Control (LoC) as second defence line of the country, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin called for concrete measures to protect their lives and properties.

He was talking on Saturday to a delegation of the people affected by Indian shelling at Kotli, the southern district of Kashmir.

“People residing along the LoC live in miserable conditions as they cannot move out of their homes, plough their fields or even bury the dead,” Yasin said.

He demanded the construction of concrete bunkers alongside every residential house located along the LoC in order to provide safe cover to the people, especially to children and women, against the periodic Indian shelling from across the border.

Earlier a senior United Nations official has urged India and Pakistan to address their ‘outstanding issues’ through peaceful means, reiterating Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ concern over the growing tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca made the remarks during his talks with top Pakistani officials during a visit to Pakistan.
