Lawyer’s supporters run riot in LHC

Lahore High Court’s crowded courtroom echoed with a slew of profanities as a group of lawyers turned hooligan.

Justice Abdul Sami Khan in the courtroom was hearing a habeas corpus petition which had been filed by a woman, Bilquis Zareena. Bilquis had sought the recovery of her daughter Ayesha and grandson Alyan Ali. The two had been missing from the past six months.

Ms Zareena has claimed that her daughter was the second wife of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) member Maqsood Buttar, She further claims that life of her daughter and grandson are in danger.

Upon the arrival of DIG investigation Sultan Ahmad, the judge resumed the hearing amid the presence of a team of lawyers supporting Mr Buttar. The judge expressed his dismay at the delay after the officer had sought more time to complete the investigation.

A junior associate of senior counsel Asma Jahangir Barrister Usama Malik who was representing the petitioner,  lamented that the police had not issued a single summons to any of the suspects, even though the FIR was registered in December last year. Mr Malik alleged that the police were protecting Mr Buttar.

PBC member Ishtiaq A. Khan arguing on behalf of the legal fraternity, argued that the case against his colleague had been fabricated as part of a scheme hatched by his political rivals. Furthermore the lawyer denied that Mr Buttar was related to the missing woman, and challenged the maintainability of the petition.

Mr Malik was attacked by the supporters of Mr Buttar, soon after the judge adjourned further hearing until 23rd June  and retreated to his chambers. The supporters of Mr Buttar roughed up Mr Malik and ripped his shirt. Some of the lawyers also manhandled the complainant, Ms Zareena.

Furthermore the lawyers also shouted profanities which were directed at Ms Jahangir, the lawyers alleged that she had filed a fake case against Mr Buttar to tarnish his reputation, afterwards supporters of Mr Buttar walked out of the courtroom shouting slogans against her.

Petitioner Ms Zareena had filed claims that her daughter who had worked in Mr Buttar’s law chambers after which they got married. Ms Zareena claims that her daughter had informed her that the two had developed differences.

She said that Ms Ayesha and her two-year-old son had been living in a flat in Model Town and alleged that Mr Buttar had tried to kill Ms Ayesha once before, by pushing her off a cliff near Murree, causing her multiple injuries and fractures.

The petitioner said that in November 2016, she had visited her daughter’s residence in Model Town however she wasn’t there. The petitioner expressed apprehensions about the life of her daughter and grandson. She also alleged that her family had been receiving threats from the lawyer’s side.
