LHC seeks govt response on Model Town incident report by Sept 12

LHC seeks govt response on Model Town incident report by Sept 12: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday summoned a response from the government by September 12 on a petition filed for the release of a judicial inquiry report conducted by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi into the killings of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)’s workers in 2014.

The petition is filed by the families of victims killed in Model Town during an ‘anti-encroachment’ operation conducted by police. At least 14 people were killed and 100 others injured in the police action.

The court has also asked clarification from the government on why the judicial inquiry report has not been yet made public.

Earlier, PAT chief Tahirul Qadri in one of his public address demanded that the Justice Najfi Commission report on the Model Town incident be made public, asking what Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif is afraid of if he is not responsible for the tragedy.

Qadri said Sharif was declared responsible for the incident by the report which is why he hasn’t made it public even after three years.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanullah, however, talking to media recently, said that the case is still being heard by the court and the report cannot be made public till then.

If the court deems fit it can make the report public, he added.

Sanaullah said that lawyers representing PAT had themselves challenged the constitution of the commission, adding that Qadri is using the incident for political means.
