Manzoor Watto Parted Ways With PPP Along With Family: In a major setback to the PPP ahead of the July 25 elections, former Punjab chief minister Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo on Thursday jumped on the PTI’s bandwagon along with his family ending their decade-long association with the party of Bhuttos.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf issued party tickets to Pakistan Peoples Party’s former Punjab president Manzoor Wattoo’s son and daughter on Thursday for upcoming general elections 2018.
Recently, the Wattoo family parted ways with Bilawal-led party PPP and joined hands with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Wattoo’s son Jahangir Wattoo has been issued a ticket for PP-185 Okara, while daughter Rubina Shaheen has been given a ticket for PP-186 Okara. Fawad Chaudhry from PTI confirmed issuance of tickets to the former PPP leader’s children.
It is important to mention that here Manzoor Wattoo will contest the election as an independent candidate.
Wattoo declared joining of Pakistan People’s Party on 29 May 2008 along with party members in Islamabad soon after winning a decisive victory in February 2008 elections in which he won from two constituencies NA-146 and NA-147 as an independent and his daughter Rubina Shaheen Wattoo won PP-188.
Wattoo served as Federal Minister for Industries and Production in the PPP government of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and in November 2009, after that he became Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas.
In 2012, his son, Khurram Jahangir Wattoo, who won NA-147 after his father left his home constituency was made the Parliamentary Secretary for Establishment and Cabinet Divisions by the PPP leadership.
In 2012, President Asif Zardari made Mian Manzoor Wattoo as the Provisional President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Central Punjab.
Manzoor Wattoo’s son Mian Khurrum Jahangir Wattoo confirmed the development. Asked if his father had also joined the PTI, Khurrum replied that father will also go with the children, implying thereby that elder Wattoo would eventually be siding with the PTI after the polls.
Though Mr Wattoo had formally joined the PPP in October 2012 he served as Federal Minister for Industries and Production in the cabinet of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani. In November, 2009, his portfolio was changed and he became Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas.
He was nominated party’s Punjab President in October, 2012. Since then, he has been a subject of criticism by old party guards who resented his entry into the PPP terming him an alien to the party. A strong group within the PPP remained active against him till he resigned as party’s central Punjab president in November 2015.
