Ministry calls for Ban on new party backed by banned leader: According to a government document, the Interior ministry of Pakistan had called for the electoral commission of Pakistan to bar a new political party which is backed by a banned leader from contesting for elections. Ministry through a letter which was dated September the 22nd had made recommendations to the Election Commission of Pakistan to reject the newly formed Milli Muslim League’s (MML) application which asks for it to become a official party. The letter calls for the ban as it is “affliated” with Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT). LeT is a militant group which had been blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks which killed 166 people.

The ministry said through a two page document “The registration of MML is not supported.”The letter and the correspondence had been confirmed by both Spokesman for the election commission along witht the Interior ministry.

Hafiz Saeed who is the founder of LeT had been designated by the United States as a terrorist, Saeed currently heads the Jamaat ud Dawa charity. United States views Hafiz Saeed as the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, it has also offered a $10 million reward for information leading to his imprisonment.

Hafiz Saeed has been under house arrest.

MML has been said to have “ideologically of the same hue” as LeT and its affliated charities such as Jamaat ud Dawa (JuD) and the Falah e Insanyat Foundation (FIF).

However on the other hand spokesman for the MML through a statement has termed the ministry’s letter as unlawful.

While dennying that the MML had any links with banned organisations he added that “MML isn’t a bus or truck which needs registration.”

The letter by the interior ministry comes a week after the MML had caused a stir by winning 5 percent of votes in a parliamentary by-election in Lahore on September 17.

The document said foreign countries have raised diplomatic objections to MML’s existence and the interior ministry has sought the opinions of intelligence agencies on the group.

One of the agencies, the ministry said, has warned against letting proscribed and monitored organizations enter politics with a view to gaining legitimacy.
