Opposition Leader For Senate: Senator Sherry Rehman has been nominated by the Chairperson PPP Chair Mr. Bilawal Bhutto for the position of Leader of Opposition in Senate. Upon being elected Senator Sherry will be the first one to hold this title in the Upper House. So far Senator Sherry is supported by 26 members including 8 from FATA. PPP is the party at the opposition benches with 20 Senators in the Senate. Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has also confirmed the nomination of Senator Sherry Rehman.
Whereas Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf PTI has yet to appoint the name for this seat. However name of Mr Azam Swati is being heard among the masses for this seat. In the 104 member House, PTI has a total of 13 Senators, while it claims to be enjoying support of Jamaat-e-Islami’s 2 Senators and eyeing support of independent Senators from Balochistan. PTI sources have shared that they will have a meeting with MQM leadership to request them formally for their cooperation. PTI Chairman has called a meeting on Friday to decide a party Senator for the post of Leader of Opposition in the Upper House of Parliament.
Senator Sherry Rehman was the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, twice MNA & Federal Minister for Information and Broadcast, will replace senior party leader Aitzaz Ahsan, who recently retired from the Senate as the Opposition leader. Benazir Bhutto had served the opposition leader in the National Assembly twice. Rehman would make history by becoming the first woman to lead the opposition in Senate, tweeted by Bilawal Bhutto. PPP will make history again.
As per sources a meeting between PTI & PPP representatives is expected to reach a consensus and finalize the name due to the speculation that the independent Fata Senators and those from Balochistan may not like to support Senator Sherry Rehman.
