PM Nawaz, army chief did not discuss Jindal’s visit to Pakistan: Marriyum Aurangzeb

PM Nawaz, army chief did not discuss Jindal’s visit to Pakistan: Marriyum Aurangzeb: Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb has rejected reports that recent visit of Indian entrepreneur Sajjan Jindal came under discussion during a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

“Jindal is a friend of the prime minister and met him in his personal capacity,” she stated in a statement issued on Friday.

However, earlier on Thursday, reports circulated that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif apprised Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa regarding his meeting last month with Indian steel magnate Sajjan Jindal, which was part of backchannel diplomacy between Islamabad and New Delhi.

An Indian delegation led by Jindal – a close friend of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – met Premier Nawaz at his private residence in Murree late April, remaining unnoticed by the media.

Pakistan’s civil leadership initially did not disclose the event, however, speculation, after private news media broke the story, prompted the prime minister’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz, to confirm the development on her Twitter account. “Mr Jindal is an old friend of the prime minister. Nothing ‘secret’ about the meeting and [it] should not be blown out of proportion,” she tweeted.

Speaking to BBC Urdu, important government officials said PM Nawaz during a recent meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa took him into confidence regarding his meeting with Jindal.
General Bajwa told officials that PM Nawaz’s meeting was part of backchannel diplomacy between Pakistan and India, the report stated.
According to media reports, Jindal was sent to Pakistan by Indian authorities to help reduce tensions between the two neighbours.
