Protesting Farmers thrashed by water cannon by Police: Police fired water cannon and thrashed the protesting farmers with baton charge on Friday to gain control over a protest of the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) which was held at Islamabad’s D-Chowk.

At the event which was held at D chowk the police also used tear gas shelling to stop the protestors. D-Chowk roundabout is just located outside Islamabad’s Red Zone. The protesting farmers were demanding subsidies on the fertilisers and electricity bills.

The police had placed containers to restrict access to D-Chowk. Protests of any nature have been prohibited in the Red Zone area. However, at the moment the protesters used alternative routes in order to reach the roundabout where the protest was held.

Chants against the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were vocalised by the protestors, the protestors also threatened to seal Islamabad if their demands are not met.

The protestors had attempted to reach the Parliament House, however the police action prevented them from doing so.

At the protest leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khurshid Shah arrived at the site of the protest shortly after it started. Mr Khurshid said that “Today, the budget is being presented and the farmers are out on the streets protesting, the PPP will always stand with you. We believe that Pakistan will only succeed when the poor man is well-fed and his children go to school” Shah added.

The Opposition leader further added that “Prosperity will not come if the country has a debt of Rs800 billion.  He added: “Regardless of what the budget says, prosperity will not come.

The Finance Minister of Pakistan Ishaq Dar is expected to announce the budget for the upcoming fiscal year later today.

The police had been able to push the protesters towards China Chowk and Poly Clinic and had gained control over the crowd.

The farmers had demanded to meet Sharif to present their demands within the first hour of the protest but the demand was not met.
