Sartaj Aziz says that Raheel Sharif was not sent to Saudi Arabia officially
Sartaj Aziz, whilst briefing the Foreign Affairs Committee of Senate on Saudi-Qatar conflict, has said that former Chief of Staff Raheel Sharif must comeback to Pakistan voluntarily.
Army Chief General (r) Raheel Sharif had not been appointed as the head of Saudi-led military alliance officially said the Foreign Affairs Adviser.
The Foreign Affairs Adviser added that Pakistan has decided to remain neutral in the ongoing Middle East crisis. He added that “Pakistan will not get itself involved in issues of other states.”
The Adviser told the Committee that the State of Pakistan is playing its role to resolve the issue.
Conversely Senator Shiblee Faraz commented that Raheel Sharif shall not be called back as it will effect Pakistan-Saudi relations.
He went on to mention that “50% of foreign reserves come from Middle Eastern countries sent by overseas Pakistanis.”
It is mentionable here that the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had said that the decision to appoint retired army Chief Raheel Sharif as head of the 39-nation Islamic coalition was taken by the state of Pakistan.
Last year Raheel Sharif had been selected by Riyadh as the commander of the Saudi-led alliance of Muslim-majority countries which aims at conducting counter-terrorism activities. However this had prompted concerns among the politicians and within the army command that Pakistan was becoming too involved in an organisation that excluded Iran and Iraq, where the government is dominated by Shiites.
To add to the confusion, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had said that Raheel Sharif’s appointment had been finalised earlier in January.
Asif had added that Pakistan will quit the Saudi-led Islamic coalition if it turns sectarian.
