SCO summit, Nawaz meets Ghani on the sidelines: A meeting was held between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Astana on sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit today.
According to the reports during the meeting bilateral relations, regional situation were discussed. During the meeting advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz was also present.
Earlier at a cultural gala held at Kazakhstan Capital where the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting is being held Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. After the stopover of Modi in Lahore in December 2015 this is the first time that the two head of states have met.
In the very first expansion of the SCO, the SCO will grant permanent membership to both India and Pakistan. Earlier in the 2005 Astana Summit had granted India, Iran and Pakistan the roles of observers.
The SCO was founded in Shanghai in 2001 by then presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. While Russia had been backing India’s membership, China pushed for Pakistan’s induction.
