Terrorist Attacks Warned By NACTA: Terrorists are planning to execute their nefarious designs to disturb peace and tranquility and law and order during the ongoing electioneering throughout the country ahead of July 25 polls, said a National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) official on Monday.

“Despite our security and intelligence-based operations against the terrorists, there are still intelligence reports about [possible] terrorist attacks,” said Dr Suleman Khan, the National Coordinator Nacta.

“As head of the Nacta, an organisation established to coordinate counter terrorism efforts, I would say we have received some very serious reports. Hitherto Nacta has issued 12 threat alerts based upon source reports concerning the election campaigns, some quite general and others particulars,” Dr Suleman added.

He said this while briefing a high-level meeting called to discuss terrorism preventive measures during the upcoming general elections. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minster for Interior Azam Khan at the Nacta Headquarters in Islamabad.

“The main objective of this conference is to review and coordinate our security efforts, keeping in view upcoming elections and security arrangements,” Dr Suleman Khan said while delivering his opening remarks.

“Electioneering is a long process and political parties and campaigners actively and energetically convince and persuade the masses for getting elected.” The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials briefed the meeting on security and safety measures being conveyed to all the stakeholders. All provincial home departments presented their preventive measures planned for the 2018 elections.

Senior officers of police and other law enforcement agencies apprised the federal minister and participants of the meeting on various security measures.

The Nacta, in its comprehensive presentation, informed about threat alerts issued to the relevant authorities regarding possible terrorist incidents during the election process, targeting some political leaders. It also suggested preventive measures that can be taken to thwart such terrorist attacks.

Earlier, Interior Minister Azam Khan, while expressing his views on the country’s law and order situation, said: “We should not fall victims of sectarian and religious controversial issues, which actually hinder peace efforts. We need an unbiased, across the board equal treatment against the miscreants … our action should be regardless of any party or any pressure group affiliations,” he added.

The caretaker minister hoped that by deploying police and other law enforcement forces on the election duty, the vital installations, high-risk infrastructure and terrorism prone areas of the country would be protected from terror attacks.

The meeting was attended by senior officers of all provincial home departments, police, ECP and various law enforcing agencies, among them were Brigadier Naeem (DG Monitoring), Election Commission,  Mohsin Butt (IG) Balochistan,  Waqar Chohan (DIG) and other officials.
