The 7 Pakistani Peacekeepers You Need To Know About, Honored by UN: Who are UN Peacekeepers? : Peacekeepers, as the name suggests, refers to those people who try their best to keep the peace.

The United Nations peacekeepers are required to supervise the peace processes in post-conflict regions of the world. These peacekeepers further help ex-combatants to implement the peacekeeping agreements they may have signed as a conclusion to the war.

Member countries offer volunteer peacekeeping forces for the United Peacekeeping operations. United Nations member countries share the finance of these missions.

The Security Council has the responsibility to monitor every peacekeeping mission. The first peacekeeping mission was launched in the year 1948 in which the troops were sent to the newly formed state of Israel after the conflict between the Israelis and the Arab states concluded.

United Nations Memorial Ceremony

Recently, a UN memorial ceremony was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York where seven peacekeepers belonging to Pakistan were honored with medals. These seven Pakistani peacekeepers laid their lives for keeping peace and prosperity throughout the globe.

General Antonio Guterres, who is the United Nations general secretary, paid homage to all the UN peacekeepers that lost their lives working towards a peaceful global community.

Although, the first Pakistani peacekeepers joined the UN missions on 30th September 1947, the very first official support for the peacekeeping missions of the United Nations began in the year 1960.

Pakistan claims a position (along with India and Bangladesh) among the countries with the highest number of troops for United Nations peacekeeping missions. There have been a hundred and fifty-six blue helmets that have been martyred under the UN flag.
