y a person is considered insomniac if he/ she has difficulty in falling asleep, has a disturbed sleeping pattern and suffers from severe daytime lethargy and feeling of extreme tiredness due to lack of slumber. A few causes are listed below.

  • Any disruption in an individual’s normal circadian rhythm can cause insomnia. An example is of a jet-lagged individual.
  • Certain medical conditions such as GERD, asthma, COPD, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and stroke can affect an individual’s normal sleep patterns leading to insomnia.
  • Using your phones or iPads before going to bed can also affect your sleeping patterns. A study has shown that the light emitted from these devices alters natural melatonin production in the body leading to a difficulty in falling asleep. In order to prevent this from happening, it is generally recommended to switch off your devices at least an hour or two before bed time.
  • Certain medications can also affect the normal sleep pattern. Corticosteroids, statins, ACE inhibitors, alpha and beta blockers have been implicated in causing insomnia.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy is utilized to treat insomnia either through group therapy or one-on-one counselling sessions.
  • Prescription sleeping pills, melatonin supplements, antidepressants and even anti-histamines can be used for treating insomnia.
  • People suffering from insomnia are encouraged to meditate regularly, follow a healthy diet regime and incorporate daily exercise in their routine.
  • It is also advised to leave all devices outside the bedroom so that a restful sleep is made possible.
