y a person is considered insomniac if he/ she has difficulty in falling asleep, has a disturbed sleeping pattern and suffers from severe daytime lethargy and feeling of extreme tiredness due to lack of slumber. A few causes are listed below.

  • Any disruption in an individual’s normal circadian rhythm can cause insomnia. An example is of a jet-lagged individual.
  • Certain medical conditions such as GERD, asthma, COPD, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and stroke can affect an individual’s normal sleep patterns leading to insomnia.
  • Using your phones or iPads before going to bed can also affect your sleeping patterns. A study has shown that the light emitted from these devices alters natural melatonin production in the body leading to a difficulty in falling asleep. In order to prevent this from happening, it is generally recommended to switch off your devices at least an hour or two before bed time.
  • Certain medications can also affect the normal sleep pattern. Corticosteroids, statins, ACE inhibitors, alpha and beta blockers have been implicated in causing insomnia.

Treating Insomnia

Treatment for insomnia depends on the underlying cause and insomnia treatment focuses on uprooting the very cause. Both medical and behavioral forms of treatment are used for insomnia:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy is utilized to treat insomnia either through group therapy or one-on-one counselling sessions.
  • Prescription sleeping pills, melatonin supplements, antidepressants and even anti-histamines can be used for treating insomnia.
  • People suffering from insomnia are encouraged to meditate regularly, follow a healthy diet regime and incorporate daily exercise in their routine.
  • It is also advised to leave all devices outside the bedroom so that a restful sleep is made possible.
