Yoko Ono not to blame for breakup of John Lennon’s marriage
It’s a story often retold… and often refuted: Yoko Ono broke up The Beatles… and John Lennon’s first marriage.
But according to a recently resurfaced letter Lennon wrote in 1976, it’s not true. At all.
The letter, addressed to his first wife Cynthia, is one of two written by Lennon about the end of his first marriage up for auction.
It reads: “As you and I well know, our marriage was over long before the advent of LSD, or Yoko Ono… and that’s reality!”
Lennon also recalls the time she asked him to remarry her and bring forth another child into the world: “I politely told you no” and suggested she “should try to avoid talking to and posing for magazines and newspapers!”
It does end on a cheerier note: “We did have some good years, so dwell on them for a change.”
The second letter was an open letter to a magazine. It reads: “Dear sir or madam, I would appreciate this letter being printed in your magazine without any editing. I think it’s only fair to me and your readers to present my side of the story. Thank you, John Lennon ’76” with a sketch added to it.
It’s thought to be in response to the News of the World publishing excerpts of Cynthia book.
