Buildings in Karachi’s Liaquatabad to be manually demolished before they cave in: SBCA

After a dilapidated building collapsed in Liaquatabad no.9 area of the city and claimed at least six lives, decision has been taken to demolish the surrounding similar structures in order to avoid further losses.

While talking to the media, Sindh Building Control Authority Demolition Deputy Director Sajjad Khan said residents have been issued notices and given time to vacate the three buildings as they are on the verge of collapsing.

The buildings will be brought down by labourers, manually, as it is difficult to take machines in the narrow streets of the area.

The SBCA official maintained the demolition of the buildings will take around six days and work will be done during the day.

Work to demolish the buildings will start around noon on Wednesday, while the removal of debris of the already collapsed building will also resume.

The officials of SBCA visited the site Tuesday night, a day after the incident took place, declaring the surrounding buildings dangerous and issuing notices to the residents.

Late Monday night, a three-storey structure in Liaquatabad no.9 crumbled down, claiming at least six lives and injuring 12 others.

According to eyewitnesses, the building was old and in a dilapidated state and some bricks could be seen falling off in days leading up to the tragic incident.

In June, SBCA issued eviction notices to residents of 354 unsafe buildings following the first monsoon spell in the city.

The enlisted buildings were declared unsuitable for use even before rain had hit the city, but hundreds of people continue to use them.
