Confusion being created over freedom of expression, says IHC Chief Justice

Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui stated on Monday that confusion is being created among the masses over freedom of expression and must be told about the permissible form in Pakistan.

Hearing a petition regarding the presence of content deemed blasphemous on social media websites, Chief Justice Shaukat Aziz said that judiciary alone is entitled to interpret the law and the Constitution of Pakistan and that the citizens must be educated about Article 19 regarding freedom of expression.

“Certain people have objection to my shedding tears,” he added.

He advised Federal investigation Agency and police to identify the blasphemous content on websites with extreme caution.

It is pertinent to mention here that Chief Justice Shaukat Aziz’s welled up in last hearing of the case wherein he ordered immediate removal of blasphemous content from and blocking of social media websites being used by the citizens of Pakistan.
