Imran Khan Contempt case; ECP to announce verdict on July 10

The verdict in the contempt of court against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan will given by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on 10th July 2017.

ECP had given Imran Khan a week on Tuesday to submit his reply.

On 19th June 2017, during the last hearing, the proceedings were adjourned by ECP till today giving Imran a ‘last chance’ to file his reply in the case after the PTI counsel had said Imran was out of station.

PTI’s contempt proceedings against had been initiated after Khan had accused the ECP of political bias in the case against the PTI’s ‘foreign funding’ initiated on the petition of disgruntled former party leader Akbar Babar.

PTI counsel Shahid Gondal informed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan During Tuesday’s hearing, that Imran had finalized the reply however he will submit it after consultations with Babar Awan, who is a seasoned lawyer who has recently joined the party.

CEC had really taken harshly on the PTI counsel’s ‘excuses’, and said that the respondent had continued to change lawyers, it added that Awan is not registered as a counsel for the PTI chairman. He further added that the same excuse [of being out of city] was made by Imran Khan at the last hearing as well after which he was given a ‘last’ chance.

The CEC while adjourning the hearing till 10th July after repeated requests for more time from Gondal said that “We do not need his [Imran] reply and will announce our verdict at the next hearing.

While talking to the media after the hearing, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Danial Aziz expressed surprise at the patience displayed by the ECP in the matter.

He said institutions are not supposed to be so patient when it comes to these issues.
