JIT report rejected: Cabinet advises PM not to step down

At a crucial meeting, the members of Federal Cabinet have advised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif not to tender resignation in the wake of growing political pressure following the release of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report.

According to reports, the cabinet members have also rejected the JIT report. “They have reposed confidence in Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s leadership and advised him not to step down in the wake of opposition’s demand,” a source told our correspondent.

He said the cabinet has rejected all demands of the opposition, including the resignation of PM Nawaz Sharif, adding that “the cabinet has termed the current political situation has a conspiracy against development of the country.”

The meeting was chaired by PM Nawaz Sharif who reportedly took his ministers and coalition partners into confidence over the situation that has arisen following the JIT report about his family’s financial assets.

Reports said the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the JIT report about his family business is based on assumptions and allegations. “He said his family earned nothing in politics but lost much. Projects worth billions of rupees are being executed but no evidence of any corruption has been formed,” he said.

Reports said the cabinet was briefed about the ruling party’s strategy to challenge the JIT report in the Supreme Court.

The decision to convene the cabinet was taken yesterday during an “informal meeting” at the Prime Minister’s House.

The meeting was attended by members of PM Sharif’s kitchen cabinet and his legal team, including Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the prime minister’s daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif were also present in the meeting, the third such huddle in as many days. The prime minister’s daughter has signaled that the PM wouldn’t resign.

She tweeted: “Insh’Allah he won’t resign. Should Nawaz Sharif resign because not a single allegation of misuse of public money has been proven against him?” There are reports that the ruling party is gearing up to challenge the JIT report in the Supreme Court.

Federal Cabinet approved proposals of a number of agreements and Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation with different countries.

It approved start of negotiations for draft MoU with Maldives for opening up of Defence Credit Line of ten million dollar and an MoU for cooperation in the field of tourism.

The cabinet approved start of negotiations on air services agreements with Azerbaijan, Serbia, Vietnam and Brazil.

Approval was given to signing of MoUs for cooperation with Azerbaijan and Tajikistan in trade promotion.

The meeting is approved signing of defence cooperation agreements with Indonesia, Turkey and Poland. It also accorded approval to signing of MoUs with Russia for cooperation in education, finance and banking sectors.

It also approved proposals of a number of agreements and Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation with different countries.

The Committee formed to suggest name of the airport would consist of Mir Hasil Bizenjo, Irfan Siddiqui, Marriyum Aurangzeb and Barrister Zafarullah.
