Lahore: Christian mechanic has been arrested for alleged Blasphemy

On 15th June 2017, a Christian bicycle mechanic in Lahore had been arrested over accusations of blasphemy. On Thursday, 22nd June 2017, the police said the allegation came after he had became part of a quarrel in respect to payment for services with a customer.

The Pak Center for Law and Justice is investigating the case.

According to Human rights activist Napoleon Qayyum,  Ashfaq Masih, who is a resident of Mariam Colony in Green Town in Lahore, had been working at a repair shop in the Bagarhian suburb of the city when Muhammad Ishfaq, who is a resident of the same area, had his bicycle repaired by him.

Mr Qayyum says that the two became a part of a heated dispute when Masih demanded Rs35-40 for his services while Ishfaq had asked Masih to reduce the price as he is a poor man.

The rights activist says that the the argument got intensified when Masih did not agree to lower the fee and reminded the bicycle owner that he was a poor man himself and needed the money as well.

Qayyum further stated that after people had circled around them to witness the incident, unknown individuals levelled allegations of blasphemy against Masih, incurring the disagreement to further intensify the already heated situation.

Police, who had been brought to the scene, arrested Masih, moving him to the Green Town police station.

Station House Officer (SHO) of Green Town police station Wasim Akhtar, while talking to a private newspaper had confirmed that a case of Blasphemy had been registered against Masih on 15th June 2017, after his arrest.
