Nehal Hashmi has given response to Supreme Court on contemptuous speech issue
Former PML-N member, Senator Nehal Hashmi, who was ousted from the Party membership, on Tuesday, 20th June 2017 had submitted his reply before the Supreme Court to a petition which concerned with his threats against “those investigating” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.
Earlier the chief justice had taken a suo motu notice of a video in which Hashmi was seen apparently warning the individuals who were conducting a Supreme Court-sanctioned investigation, that they will be “taken to task” for grilling the premier’s family.
The remarks of the Senator were directed at the Supreme Court appointed Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which is probing the Sharif family’s business dealings abroad.
In the petition which was filed on Tuesday, 20th June 2017 senator Nehal had defended himself by saying that he is a “loyal Pakistani with regard for the judiciary“. Hashmi also said that he had been a lawyer for thirteen years and he could not do anything that would “harm” the judiciary.
The petition further goes on to say that “I only made the speech once but the media replayed it several time.”
The petition further goes on to say that Hashmi, being a member of the Karachi Bar and the High Court Bar Association of Sindh, has taken part in “various campaigns and movements for restoration of judiciary and democracy.”
Hashmi further went on to accuse Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf Chairman for taking his speech out of context.
Furthermore the senator also alleged that his political opponents are plotting against him and requested the apex court to investigate the matter.
The petition noted that “The court has appointed Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf as a prosecutor in the case” it further went ahead and added that the AG calling on the Sindh government to take action against Hashmi is surprising in this context.
Sindh prosecutor general was written to by the AGP. The AGP had stated that since the speech was made by Hashmi in Karachi, proceedings against him should be initiated there.
Hashmi in his reply added that “The AG cannot be both prosecutor and party to the case.”
He also sought the court’s stay on criminal proceedings against him and the withdrawal of the show cause notice issued against him regarding his remarks.
